Commodity and energy markets break the assumptions that equity research takes for granted: the underlying is physical, storage and delivery matter, prices spike and mean-revert on seasonal and weather cycles, and in electricity the asset cannot be stored at all. That is why this literature has its own models — futures-curve dynamics, storage-constrained pricing, spike-jump processes for power, and the carbon-market mechanics of emission allowances — and why volatility and forecasting results from equities rarely transfer.
The rigor split here is stark. Forecasting papers (oil, gas, power prices) often test against naïve and seasonal baselines on real data and score well. Pricing and hedging papers for structured energy contracts tend to be theory-first. When a paper claims a trading result, check whether it uses tradable front-month contracts with roll costs or a spliced continuous series that never existed, and whether the sample includes 2020–2022, the stress test nothing in this market escaped.

We present a new model for commodity pricing that enhances accuracy by integrating four distinct risk factors: spot price, stochastic volatility, convenience yield, and stochastic interest rates. While the influence of these four variables on commodity futures prices is well recognized, their combin
In energy markets, joint historical and implied calibration is of paramount importance for practitioners yet notoriously challenging due to the need to align historical correlations of futures contracts with implied volatility smiles from the option market. We address this crucial problem with a par
This paper investigates whether structural econometric models can rival machine learning in forecasting energy–macro dynamics while retaining causal interpretability. Using monthly data from 1999 to 2025, we develop a unified framework that integrates Time-Varying Parameter Structural VARs (TVP-SVA
In this paper, we propose a complete modelling framework to value several batteries in the electricity intraday market at the trading session scale. The model consists of a stochastic model for the 24 mid-prices (one price per delivery hour) combined with a deterministic model for the liquidity cost
As renewable energy integration increases supply variability, battery energy storage systems (BESS) present a viable solution for balancing supply and demand. This paper proposes a novel approach for optimizing battery BESS participation in multiple electricity markets. We develop a joint bidding st
We develop a mathematical model for intraday dispatch of co-located wind-battery energy assets. Focusing on the primary objective of firming grid-side actual production vis-a-vis the preset day-ahead hourly generation targets, we conduct a comprehensive study of the resulting stochastic control prob
Recent studies provide evidence that decomposing the electricity price into the long-term seasonal component (LTSC) and the remaining part, predicting both separately, and then combining their forecasts can bring significant accuracy gains in day-ahead electricity price forecasting. However, not muc
Probabilistic price forecasting has recently gained attention in power trading because decisions based on such predictions can yield significantly higher profits than those made with point forecasts alone. At the same time, methods are being developed to combine predictive distributions, since no mo
The growing importance of intraday trading in Europe, driven by the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources, has led to higher volatility and periods of market stress. Understanding how order flow behaves under varying liquidity conditions requires models that adapt to the state of the ma
Connectedness measures quantify aggregate risk spillovers but obscure the local interaction patterns that generate systemic risk. We develop a motif-based framework that first extracts multiscale backbones from quantile connectedness networks and then identifies directed triadic motifs whose frequen
Electricity price forecasting supports decision-making in energy markets and asset operation. Probabilistic forecasts are increasingly adopted to explicitly quantify uncertainty, typically issued as quantile predictions or ensembles of the full predictive distribution. However, how improvements in s
We study the problem of forecasting and optimally trading day-ahead versus real-time (DART) price spreads in U.S. wholesale electricity markets. Building on the framework of Galarneau-Vincent et al., we extend spike prediction from a single zone to a multi-zone setting and treat both positive and ne
Quantifying the uncertainty of forecasting models is essential to assess and mitigate the risks associated with data-driven decisions, especially in volatile domains such as electricity markets. Machine learning methods can provide highly accurate electricity price forecasts, critical for informing
Probabilistic intraday electricity price forecasting is becoming increasingly important with the growth of renewable generation and the rise in demand-side engagement. Their uncertainties have increased the trading risks closer to delivery and the subsequent imbalance settlement costs. As a conseque
We investigate the impact of several critical events associated with the Russo Ukrainian war, started officially on 24 February 2022 with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, on ten European electricity markets, two natural gas markets (the European reference trading hub TTF and N.Y. NGNMX market) and h
This study investigates the relationships between agricultural spot markets and external uncertainties via the multifractal detrending moving-average cross-correlation analysis (MF-X-DMA). The dataset contains the Grains & Oilseeds Index (GOI) and its five sub-indices of wheat, maize, soyabeans, ric
Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is a well-suited approach to financial decision-making, where an agent makes decisions based on its trading strategy developed from market observations. Existing DRL intraday trading strategies mainly use price-based features to construct the state space. They negle
There are several approaches to modeling and forecasting time series as applied to prices of commodities and financial assets. One of the approaches is to model the price as a non-stationary time series process with heteroscedastic volatility (variance of price). The goal of the research is to gener
We consider the construction of renewable portfolios targeting specified carbon-free (CFE) hourly performance scores. We work in a probabilistic framework that uses a collection of simulation scenarios and imposes probability constraints on achieving the desired CFE score. In our approach there is a
Drawing inspiration from the significant impact of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the recent COVID-19 pandemic on global financial markets, this study conducts a thorough analysis of three key crude oil futures markets: WTI, Brent, and Shanghai (SC). Employing the visibility graph (VG) meth
