Commodity and energy markets break the assumptions that equity research takes for granted: the underlying is physical, storage and delivery matter, prices spike and mean-revert on seasonal and weather cycles, and in electricity the asset cannot be stored at all. That is why this literature has its own models — futures-curve dynamics, storage-constrained pricing, spike-jump processes for power, and the carbon-market mechanics of emission allowances — and why volatility and forecasting results from equities rarely transfer.
The rigor split here is stark. Forecasting papers (oil, gas, power prices) often test against naïve and seasonal baselines on real data and score well. Pricing and hedging papers for structured energy contracts tend to be theory-first. When a paper claims a trading result, check whether it uses tradable front-month contracts with roll costs or a spliced continuous series that never existed, and whether the sample includes 2020–2022, the stress test nothing in this market escaped.

This paper presents a new method for combining (or aggregating or ensembling) multivariate probabilistic forecasts, considering dependencies between quantiles and marginals through a smoothing procedure that allows for online learning. We discuss two smoothing methods: dimensionality reduction using
We propose DeePM (Deep Portfolio Manager), a structured deep-learning macro portfolio manager trained end-to-end to maximize a robust, risk-adjusted utility. DeePM addresses three fundamental challenges in financial learning: (1) it resolves the asynchronous “ragged filtration” problem via a Directe
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are a cornerstone of the energy transition, as their ability to shift electricity across time enables both grid stability and the integration of renewable generation. This paper investigates the profitability of different market bidding strategies for BESS in th
Accurate forecasting of commodity price spikes is vital for countries with limited economic buffers, where sudden increases can strain national budgets, disrupt import-reliant sectors, and undermine food and energy security. This paper introduces a hybrid forecasting framework that combines historic
We determine forest lease value and optimal harvesting strategies under model parameter uncertainty within stochastic bio-economic models that account for catastrophe risk. Catastrophic events are modeled as a Poisson point process, with a two-factor stochastic convenience yield model capturing the
We study how much the in-sample performance of trading strategies based on linear predictive models is reduced out-of-sample due to overfitting. More specifically, we compute the in- and out-of-sample means and variances of the corresponding PnLs and use these to derive a closed-form approximation f
We study the effect of stochastic feeding costs on animal-based commodities with particular focus on aquaculture. More specifically, we use soybean futures to infer on the stochastic behaviour of salmon feed, which we assume to follow a Schwartz-2-factor model. We compare the decision of harvesting
Accurate short-term price forecasting is essential for daily operations in electricity markets. This article introduces a new method, called Smoothing Quantile Regression (SQR) Averaging, that improves upon well-performing probabilistic forecasting schemes. To demonstrate its utility, a comprehensiv
The rapid growth of weather-dependent renewable generation increases price volatility and imbalance penalty risk in power markets, creating the need for advanced quantitative trading strategies. We develop a data-driven continuous-time stochastic optimal control framework for intraday electricity tr
Electricity markets are under increasing pressure to maintain reliability amidst rising renewable penetration, demand variability, and occasional price shocks. Traditional capacity market designs often fall short in addressing this by relying on expected-value metrics of energy unserved, which overl
This paper analyses the risk factors around investing in global supply chain infrastructure: the energy market, investor sentiment, and global shipping costs. It presents portfolio strategies associated with dynamic risks. A time-varying parameter vector autoregression (TVP-VAR) model is used to stu
Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs) have historically relied on trend-following rules that operate on vastly different horizons from long-term breakouts that capture major directional moves to short-term momentum signals that thrive in fast-moving markets. Despite a large body of work on trend followi
We amend and extend the Chiarella model of financial markets to deal with arbitrary long-term value drifts in a consistent way. This allows us to improve upon existing calibration schemes, opening the possibility of calibrating individual monthly time series instead of classes of time series. The te
This paper investigates optimal execution strategies in intraday energy markets through a mutually exciting Hawkes process model. Calibrated to data from the German intraday electricity market, the model effectively captures key empirical features, including intra-session volatility, distinct intrad
Given the vital role that smart meter data could play in handling uncertainty in energy markets, data markets have been proposed as a means to enable increased data access. However, most extant literature considers energy markets and data markets separately, which ignores the interdependence between
In the analysis of commodity futures, it is commonly assumed that futures prices are driven by two latent factors: short-term fluctuations and long-term equilibrium price levels. In this study, we extend this framework by introducing a novel state-space functional regression model that incorporates
In this paper we develop a novel hidden Markov graphical model to investigate time-varying interconnectedness between different financial markets. To identify conditional correlation structures under varying market conditions and accommodate stylized facts embedded in financial time series, we rely
This paper studies pricing of weather-derivative (WD) contracts on temperature and precipitation. For temperature-linked strangles in Toronto and Chicago, we benchmark a harmonic-regression/ARMA model against a feed-forward neural network (NN), finding that the NN reduces out-of-sample mean-squared
This paper presents a novel model for simulating and analyzing sparse limit order books (LOBs), with a specific application to the European intraday electricity market. In illiquid markets, characterized by significant gaps between order levels due to sparse trading volumes, traditional LOB models o
In this article, we analyze two modeling approaches for the pricing of derivative contracts on a commodity index. The first one is a microscopic approach, where the components of the index are modeled individually, and the index price is derived from their combination. The second one is a macroscopi
