Commodity and energy markets break the assumptions that equity research takes for granted: the underlying is physical, storage and delivery matter, prices spike and mean-revert on seasonal and weather cycles, and in electricity the asset cannot be stored at all. That is why this literature has its own models — futures-curve dynamics, storage-constrained pricing, spike-jump processes for power, and the carbon-market mechanics of emission allowances — and why volatility and forecasting results from equities rarely transfer.
The rigor split here is stark. Forecasting papers (oil, gas, power prices) often test against naïve and seasonal baselines on real data and score well. Pricing and hedging papers for structured energy contracts tend to be theory-first. When a paper claims a trading result, check whether it uses tradable front-month contracts with roll costs or a spliced continuous series that never existed, and whether the sample includes 2020–2022, the stress test nothing in this market escaped.

One approach to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is to incentivize carbon capturing and carbon reducing projects while simultaneously penalising excess GHG output. In this work, we present a novel market framework and characterise the optimal behaviour of GHG offset credit (OC) market partici
Intraday electricity markets play an increasingly important role in balancing the intermittent generation of renewable energy resources, which creates a need for accurate probabilistic price forecasts. However, research to date has focused on univariate approaches, while in many European intraday el
We propose two parametric approaches to evaluate swing contracts with firm constraints. Our objective is to define approximations for the optimal control, which represents the amounts of energy purchased throughout the contract. The first approach involves approximating the optimal control by means
Accurate forecasts of the impact of spatial weather and pan-European socio-economic and political risks on hourly electricity demand for the mid-term horizon are crucial for strategic decision-making amidst the inherent uncertainty. Most importantly, these forecasts are essential for the operational
We investigate the concept of network momentum, a novel trading signal derived from momentum spillover across assets. Initially observed within the confines of pairwise economic and fundamental ties, such as the stock-bond connection of the same company and stocks linked through supply-demand chains
We introduce the concept of temporal hierarchy forecasting (THieF) in predicting day-ahead electricity prices and show that reconciling forecasts for hourly products, 2- to 12-hour blocks, and baseload contracts significantly (up to 13%) improves accuracy at all levels. These results remain consiste
Double auctions are widely used in financial markets, such as those for stocks, derivatives, currencies, and commodities, to match demand and supply. Once all buyers and sellers have placed their trade requests, the exchange determines how these requests are to be matched. The two most common object
Operational decisions relying on predictive distributions of electricity prices can result in significantly higher profits compared to those based solely on point forecasts. However, the majority of models developed in both academic and industrial settings provide only point predictions. To address
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict between two major agricultural powers has posed significant threats and challenges to the global food system and world food security. Focusing on the impact of the conflict on the global agricultural market, we propose a new analytical framework for tail dependenc
The energy transition has increased the reliance on intermittent energy sources, destabilizing energy markets and causing unprecedented volatility, culminating in the global energy crisis of 2021. In addition to harming producers and consumers, volatile energy markets may jeopardize vital decarboniz
Electricity price forecasting approaches generally fall into two categories: data-driven models, which learn from historical patterns, or fundamental models, which simulate market mechanisms. We propose a novel and highly efficient data-driven merit order model that integrates both paradigms. The mo
This paper is devoted to the price-storage dynamics in natural gas markets. A novel stochastic path-dependent volatility model is introduced with path-dependence in both price volatility and storage increments. Model calibrations are conducted for both the price and storage dynamics. Further, we dis
This study aims to address the challenges of futures price prediction in high-frequency trading (HFT) by proposing a continuous learning factor predictor based on graph neural networks. The model integrates multi-factor pricing theories with real-time market dynamics, effectively bypassing the limit
Probabilistic electricity price forecasting (PEPF) is vital for short-term electricity markets, yet the multivariate nature of day-ahead prices - spanning 24 consecutive hours - remains underexplored. At the same time, real-time decision-making requires methods that are both accurate and fast. We in
This work extends a previous work in regime detection, which allowed trading positions to be profitably adjusted when a new regime was detected, to ex ante prediction of regimes, leading to substantial performance improvements over the earlier model, over all three asset classes considered (equities
In this paper, we develop a general rough volatility model for commodities that provides an automatic calibration of the initial term structure of the futures prices and an appropriate treatment of the Samuelson effect. After the theoretical analysis of this general model, we focus on the rBergomi a
Range-based volatility estimators are widely used in financial econometrics to quantify risk and market stress, yet their application to local commodity markets remains limited. This paper shows how open-high–low-close (OHLC) volatility estimators can be adapted to monitor localized market distress
Accurate probabilistic forecasting of intraday electricity prices is critical for market participants to inform trading decisions. Existing studies rely on specific domain features, such as Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) and the last price. However, the rich information in the orderbook remain
The optimal control of sustainable energy supply systems, including renewable energies and energy storage, takes a central role in the decarbonization of industrial systems. However, the use of fluctuating renewable energies leads to fluctuations in energy generation and requires a suitable control
This technical report presents a stochastic model for pricing weather derivatives and devising hedging strategies tailored to Indian markets. We model temperature dynamics using a modified Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with jumps to account for sudden shocks, such as heatwaves and coldwaves. Historical
