Commodity and energy markets break the assumptions that equity research takes for granted: the underlying is physical, storage and delivery matter, prices spike and mean-revert on seasonal and weather cycles, and in electricity the asset cannot be stored at all. That is why this literature has its own models — futures-curve dynamics, storage-constrained pricing, spike-jump processes for power, and the carbon-market mechanics of emission allowances — and why volatility and forecasting results from equities rarely transfer.
The rigor split here is stark. Forecasting papers (oil, gas, power prices) often test against naïve and seasonal baselines on real data and score well. Pricing and hedging papers for structured energy contracts tend to be theory-first. When a paper claims a trading result, check whether it uses tradable front-month contracts with roll costs or a spliced continuous series that never existed, and whether the sample includes 2020–2022, the stress test nothing in this market escaped.

The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), the worlds largest cap-and-trade carbon market, is central to EU climate policy. This study analyzes its efficiency, price behavior, and market structure from 2010 to 2020. Using an AR-GARCH framework, we find pronounced price clustering and shor
Virtual bidding plays an important role in two-settlement electric power markets, as it can reduce discrepancies between day-ahead and real-time markets. Renewable energy penetration increases volatility in electricity prices, making accurate forecasting critical for virtual bidders, reducing uncert
Deep generative models are becoming increasingly used as tools for financial analysis. However, it is unclear how these models will influence financial markets, especially when they infer financial value in a semi-autonomous way. In this work, we explore the interplay between deep generative models
The European carbon market plays a pivotal role in the European Union’s ambitious target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Understanding the intricacies of factors influencing European Union Emission Trading System (EU ETS) market prices is paramount for effective policy making and strategy im
Due to major shifts in European energy supply, a structural change can be observed in Austrian electricity spot price data starting from the second quarter of the year 2021 onward. In this work we study the performance of two different factor models for the electricity spot price in three different
In this article we discuss the application of the Heath-Jarrow-Morton framework Heath et al. [26] to energy markets. The goal of the article is to give a detailed overview of the topic, focusing on practical aspects rather than on theory, which has been widely studied in literature. This work aims t
This study examines market behavior in critical mineral investments using a novel analytical framework that combines change-point detection (PELT algorithm) with cross-sectional analysis. This research analyzes ESG-ranked critical mineral ETFs from March 31, 2014, to April 19, 2024, using the S&P 50
In April 2020, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange temporarily switched the pricing formula for West Texas Intermediate oil market options from the Black model to the Bachelier model. In this context, we introduce an additive Bachelier model that provides a simple closed-form solution and a good descrip
In this paper, we examine the dynamic spillovers among the crude oil, carbon emission allowance, climate change, and agricultural markets. Adopting a novel $R^2$ decomposed connectedness approach, our empirical analysis reveals several key findings. The overall TCI dynamics have been mainly dominate
This paper presents a novel hybrid approach for constricting probabilistic forecasts that combines both the Quantile Regression Averaging (QRA) method and the factor-based averaging scheme. The performance of the approach is evaluated on data sets from two European energy markets - the German EPEX S
Deep Reinforcement Learning (Deep RL) has been explored for a number of applications in finance and stock trading. In this paper, we present a practical implementation of Deep RL for trading natural gas futures contracts. The Sharpe Ratio obtained exceeds benchmarks given by trend following and mean
This paper studies a joint stochastic optimal control and stopping (JCtrlOS) problem motivated by aquaculture operations, where the objective is to maximize farm profit through an optimal feeding strategy and harvesting time under stochastic price dynamics. We introduce a simplified aquaculture mode
The provision of renewable electricity is the foundation for a sustainable future. To achieve the goal of sustainable renewable energy, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) could play a key role to counteract the intermittency of solar and wind generation power. In order to aid the system, the BESS
We propose to use a recently introduced non-parametric tool named Differentiable Information Imbalance (DII) to identify variables that are causally related – potentially through non-linear relationships – to the financial returns of the European Union Allowances (EUAs) within the EU Emissions Tradi
The increasing penetration of variable renewable energy and flexible demand technologies, such as electric vehicles and heat pumps, introduces significant uncertainty in power systems, resulting in greater imbalance; defined as the deviation between scheduled and actual supply or demand. Short-term
We present a systematic, trend-following strategy, applied to commodity futures markets, that combines univariate trend indicators with cross-sectional trend indicators that capture so-called {"\em momentum spillover"}, which can occur when there is a lead-lag relationship between the trending behav
This paper examines the influence of low-frequency macroeconomic variables on the high-frequency returns of copper futures and the long-term correlation with the S&P 500 index, employing GARCH-MIDAS and DCC-MIDAS modeling frameworks. The estimated results of GARCH-MIDAS show that realized volatility
In this article, a multiple split method is proposed that enables construction of multidimensional probabilistic forecasts of a selected set of variables. The method uses repeated resampling to estimate uncertainty of simultaneous multivariate predictions. This nonparametric approach links the gap b
In this note, we illustrate the computation of the approximation of the supply curves using a one-step basis. We derive the expression for the L2 approximation and propose a procedure for the selection of nodes of the approximation. We illustrate the use of this approach with three large sets of bid
This paper adopts the random matrix theory (RMT) to analyze the correlation structure of the global agricultural futures market from 2000 to 2020. It is found that the distribution of correlation coefficients is asymmetric and right skewed, and many eigenvalues of the correlation matrix deviate from
