Market microstructure studies how prices actually form: the dynamics of limit order books, the economics of market making, price impact of large orders, and the information content of order flow. It is the layer where trading strategy meets market plumbing, and it matters to anyone whose backtest assumes fills at mid-price.
Two branches dominate this collection. The theoretical branch models order books with queueing theory and stochastic control — mathematically rich, but check whether the model’s assumptions (Poisson arrivals, constant spreads) survive contact with data. The empirical branch measures impact curves, adverse selection, and liquidity patterns from tick data; its perennial weakness is dataset access, so pay attention to which venue and period a result comes from before assuming it generalizes.

We consider a class of learning problems in which an agent liquidates a risky asset while creating both transient price impact driven by an unknown convolution propagator and linear temporary price impact with an unknown parameter. We characterize the trader’s performance as maximization of a revenu
We develop a mean field game model for optimal trading in which the interaction among traders is mediated by the dynamics of the limit order book. The bid- and ask-side order densities are modelled as stochastic processes with values in infinite-dimensional function spaces that solve stochastic part
Recent scholarship shows that informed traders increasingly disguise trades in economically linked securities such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Linking that
Financial models do not merely analyse markets, but actively shape them. This effect, known as performativity, describes how financial theories and the subsequent actions based on them influence market processes, by creating self-fulfilling prophecies. Although discussed in the literature on economi
Passive investing has gained immense popularity due to its low fees and the perceived simplicity of focusing on zero tracking error, rather than security selection. However, our analysis shows that the passive (zero tracking error) approach of waiting until the market close on the day of index recon
We propose a novel two-stage framework to detect lead-lag relationships in the Chinese A-share market. First, long-term coupling between stocks is measured via daily data using correlation, dynamic time warping, and rank-based metrics. Then, high-frequency data (1-, 5-, and 15-minute) is used to det
Devising models of the limit order book that realistically reproduce the market response to exogenous trades is extremely challenging and fundamental in order to test trading strategies. We propose a novel explainable model for small tick assets, the Non-Markovian Zero Intelligence, which is a varia
This paper addresses the trade-off between internalisation and externalisation in the management of stochastic trade flows. We consider agents who must absorb flows and manage risk by deciding whether to warehouse it or hedge in the market, thereby incurring transaction costs and market impact. Unli
The phenomenology of the forward rate curve (FRC) can be accurately understood by the fluctuations of a stiff elastic string (Le Coz and Bouchaud, 2024). By relating the exogenous shocks driving such fluctuations to the surprises in the order flows, we elevate the model from purely describing price
This paper examines a trade execution game for two large traders in a generalized price impact model. We incorporate a stochastic and sequentially dependent factor that exogenously affects the market price into financial markets. Our model accounts for how strategic and environmental uncertainties a
Optimal execution is an important problem faced by any trader. Most solutions are based on the assumption of constant market impact, while liquidity is known to be dynamic. Moreover, models with time-varying liquidity typically assume that it is observable, despite the fact that, in reality, it is l
We use the statistical properties of Shannon entropy estimator and Kullback-Leibler divergence to study the predictability of ultra-high frequency financial data. We develop a statistical test for the predictability of a sequence based on empirical frequencies. We show that the degree of randomness
Observations indicate that the distributions of stock returns in financial markets usually do not conform to normal distributions, but rather exhibit characteristics of high peaks, fat tails and biases. In this work, we assume that the effects of events or information on prices obey normal distribut
We study Just-in-time (JIT) liquidity provision in blockchain-based decentralized exchanges. A JIT liquidity provider (LP) monitors pending swap orders in public mempools of blockchains to sandwich orders of their choice with liquidity, depositing right before and withdrawing right after the order.
We extend the QLBS model by reformulating via considering a large trader whose transactions leave a permanent impact on the evolution of the exchange rate process and therefore affect the price of contingent claims on such processes. Through a hypothetical limit order book we quantify the exchange r
Financial exchanges across the world use limit order books (LOBs) to process orders and match trades. For research purposes it is important to have large scale efficient simulators of LOB dynamics. LOB simulators have previously been implemented in the context of agent-based models (ABMs), reinforce
Current approaches to the cryptocurrency automated market makers result in poor impermanent loss and capital efficiency. We analyze the mechanics underlying DODO Exchange’s proactive market maker (PMM) to probe for solutions to these issues, leading to our key insight of multi-token trading pools. W
Neural SDEs are continuous-time generative models for sequential data. State-of-the-art performance for irregular time series generation has been previously obtained by training these models adversarially as GANs. However, as typical for GAN architectures, training is notoriously unstable, often suf
We present a theory of excess stock market volatility, in which market movements are due to trades by very large institutional investors in relatively illiquid
We show that when a dynamic-weight AMM rebalances by creating arbitrage opportunities, the per-step log loss is the KL divergence between successive weight vectors. The Fisher-Rao metric is therefore the natural Riemannian metric on the weight simplex. The loss-minimising interpolation under the lea
