Seventy years after Markowitz, portfolio optimization is still an open problem — not because the math is unsettled, but because estimation error eats the theoretical gains. The literature here spans classical mean-variance and its regularized descendants, risk parity and volatility targeting, Black-Litterman-style view blending, and newer machine-learning approaches to covariance estimation and end-to-end allocation.
The recurring finding worth internalizing: naive equal-weight portfolios are shockingly hard to beat out of sample, so a paper’s value usually lies in how honestly it handles estimation risk — shrinkage, robust optimization, turnover penalties — rather than in the elegance of its objective function. The ranking below favors papers that test allocations on real data with realistic constraints.

This paper presents a new type of modern accumulation-based tontine, called the Riccati tontine, named after two Italians: mathematician Jacobo Riccati (b. 1676, d. 1754) and financier Lorenzo di Tonti (b. 1602, d. 1684). The Riccati tontine is yet another way of pooling and sharing longevity risk,
This paper establishes characterization results for dynamic return and star-shaped risk measures induced via backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs). We first characterize a general family of static star-shaped functionals in a locally convex Fréchet lattice. Next, employing the Pasch-Hau
We study optimal reinsurance in the framework of stochastic game theory, in which there is an insurer and two reinsurers. A Stackelberg model is established to analyze the non-cooperative relationship between the insurer and reinsurers, where the insurer is considered as the follower and the reinsur
We study investment and insurance demand decisions for an agent in a theoretical continuous-time expected utility maximization model that combines risky assets with an (exogenous) insurable background risk. This risk takes the form of a jump-diffusion process with negative jumps in the return rate o
This paper investigates the optimal management of an aggregated defined benefit pension plan in a stochastic environment. The interest rate follows the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model, the benefits follow the geometric Brownian motion while the contribution rate is determined by the spread method of fund a
We study a continuous-time Markowitz mean-variance portfolio selection model in which a naive agent, unaware of the underlying time-inconsistency, continuously reoptimizes over time. We define the resulting naive policies through the limit of discretely naive policies that are committed only in very
The minimum (worst case) value of a long-only portfolio of bonds, over a convex set of yield curves and spreads, can be estimated by its sensitivities to the points on the yield curve. We show that sensitivity based estimates are conservative, \ie, underestimate the worst case value, and that the ex
This paper investigates how Large Language Models (LLMs) from leading providers (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, DeepSeek, and xAI) can be applied to quantitative sector-based portfolio construction. We use LLMs to identify investable universes of stocks within S&P 500 sector indices and evaluate how the
We develop a formalism for insurance profit optimisation for the in-force business constraint by regulatory and risk policy related requirements. This approach is applicable to Life, P&C and Reinsurance businesses and applies in all regulatory frameworks with a solvency requirement defined in the fo
Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently gained popularity in stock trading for their ability to process multimodal financial data. However, most existing methods focus on single-stock trading and lack the capacity to reason over multiple candidates for portfolio construction. Moreover, they typic
We present the unified market-based description of returns and variances of the trades with shares of a particular security, of the trades with shares of all securities in the market, and of the trades with the market portfolio. We consider the investor who doesn’t trade the shares of his portfolio
We revisit the problem of portfolio selection, where an investor maximizes utility subject to a risk constraint. Our framework is very general and accommodates a wide range of utility and risk functionals, including non-concave utilities such as S-shaped utilities from prospect theory and non-convex
The field of artificial intelligence (AI) agents is evolving rapidly, driven by the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) to autonomously perform and refine tasks with human-like efficiency and adaptability. In this context, multi-agent collaboration has emerged as a promising approach, enabl
Portfolio optimization is a critical area in finance, aiming to maximize returns while minimizing risk. Metaheuristic algorithms were shown to solve complex optimization problems efficiently, with Genetic Algorithms and Particle Swarm Optimization being among the most popular methods. This paper int
We introduce a novel approach to portfolio optimization that leverages hierarchical graph structures and the Schur complement method to systematically reduce computational complexity while preserving full covariance information. Inspired by Lopez de Prados hierarchical risk parity and Cottons Schur
We examine the problem of optimal portfolio allocation within the framework of utility theory. We apply exponential utility to derive the optimal diversification strategy and logarithmic utility to determine the optimal leverage. We enhance existing methodologies by incorporating compound probabilit
We study conditional linear factor models in the context of asset pricing panels. Our analysis focuses on conditional means and covariances to characterize the cross-sectional and inter-temporal properties of returns and factors as well as their interrelationships. We also review the conditions outl
Several studies on portfolio construction reveal that sensible strategies essentially yield the same results as their nonsensical inverted counterparts; moreover, random portfolios managed by Malkiel’s dart-throwing monkey would outperform the cap-weighted benchmark index. Forecasting the future dev
We engineer blockchain based risk managed portfolios by creating three funds with distinct risk and return profiles: 1) Alpha - high risk portfolio; 2) Beta - mimics the wider market; and 3) Gamma - represents the risk free rate adjusted to beat inflation. Each of the sub-funds (Alpha, Beta and Gamm
We aim to provide an intertemporal, cost-efficient consumption model that extends the consumption optimization inspired by the Distribution Builder, a tool developed by Sharpe, Johnson, and Goldstein. The Distribution Builder enables the recovery of investors’ risk preferences by allowing them to se
