Seventy years after Markowitz, portfolio optimization is still an open problem — not because the math is unsettled, but because estimation error eats the theoretical gains. The literature here spans classical mean-variance and its regularized descendants, risk parity and volatility targeting, Black-Litterman-style view blending, and newer machine-learning approaches to covariance estimation and end-to-end allocation.
The recurring finding worth internalizing: naive equal-weight portfolios are shockingly hard to beat out of sample, so a paper’s value usually lies in how honestly it handles estimation risk — shrinkage, robust optimization, turnover penalties — rather than in the elegance of its objective function. The ranking below favors papers that test allocations on real data with realistic constraints.

We open up the black box behind Deep Learning for portfolio optimization and prove that a sufficiently wide and arbitrarily deep neural network (DNN) trained to maximize the Sharpe ratio of the Stochastic Discount Factor (SDF) is equivalent to a large factor model (LFM): A linear factor pricing mode
We present convincing empirical results on the application of Randomized Signature Methods for non-linear, non-parametric drift estimation for a multi-variate financial market. Even though drift estimation is notoriously ill defined due to small signal to noise ratio, one can still try to learn opti

Markowitz mean-variance portfolios with sample mean and covariance as input parameters feature numerous issues in practice. They perform poorly out of sample due to estimation error, they experience extreme weights together with high sensitivity to change in input parameters. The heavy-tail characte
Portfolio optimization is constrained by linear assumptions and insufficient integration of multi-modal information in traditional models. This study investigates three central questions in portfolio optimization. First, whether time-varying moment estimators outperform conventional sample estimators in practical portfolio construction. Second, whether incorporating a turnover penalty into the optimization objective can improve out-of-

This paper develops a mechanism through which costly changes in the representations used for portfolio choice can contribute to persistent signed order flow. Heterogeneous switching thresholds and opportunity volatility generate heterogeneous residence times, and renewal aggregation maps their execu
In this paper, we investigate a portfolio investment problem under volatility uncertainty and short-sale constraints market via sublinear expectation which is used to model volatility uncertainty. We assume the stocks admit volatility uncertainty. Thus the related portfolio has upper variance (maxim
Large-scale portfolio choice is highly sensitive to estimation error, making the preliminary asset selection essential in empirical implementation. Existing selection rules typically rely on scalar returns or low dimensional high frequency summaries, and thus discard intraday risk dynamics that may
Hierarchical Risk Parity (De Pardo) and the Schur-complement generalization of Cotton are among the most widely adopted regularised portfolio construction methods, yet both are signal-blind: they solve only the minimum-variance problem and cannot accommodate an arbitrary expected-return forecast.
