Reinforcement learning promises to learn trading policies directly from market interaction rather than through the forecast-then-optimize pipeline. The papers here apply DQN, policy gradients, and actor-critic methods to portfolio allocation, optimal execution, market making, and hedging.
Read this literature with calibrated skepticism: markets are non-stationary, near-random-walk environments with weak reward signals — close to the hardest possible setting for RL. The papers that score well on rigor tend to share three habits: they train and test on strictly separated periods, they benchmark against simple baselines (buy-and-hold, equal-weight, TWAP) rather than only against other neural approaches, and they report sensitivity to transaction costs. A Sharpe ratio from an RL agent without those three checks is a screenshot, not a result. Where the field genuinely shines is execution and hedging — problems with dense feedback and clear cost structure.

Our approach integrates a new environmental form
This study enhances a Deep Q-Network (DQN) trading model by incorporating advanced techniques like Prioritized Experience Replay, Regularized Q-Learning, Noisy Networks, Dueling, and Double DQN. This research develops a sentiment-driven quantitative trading system that leverages a large language model, FinGPT, for sentiment analysis, and explores a novel method for signal integration using a reinforcement learning algorithm, Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (TD3). We compare
High-frequency trading (HFT) has transformed modern financial markets, making reliable short-term price forecasting models essential. In this study, we present a novel approach to mid-price forecasting using Level 1 limit order book (LOB) data from NASDAQ, focusing on 100 U.S. stocks from the S&P 50
We develop a data-driven approach to dynamic portfolio selection that combines vine-copula simulation with reinforcement learning. The investor has constant relative risk aversion and maximises expected terminal utility with a running penalty on the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) of one-period los
We develop a rigorous walk-forward validation framework for algorithmic trading designed to mitigate overfitting and lookahead bias. Our methodology combines interpretable hypothesis-driven signal generation with reinforcement learning and strict out-of-sample testing. The framework enforces strict
Transaction costs and regime shifts are major reasons why paper portfolios fail in live trading. We introduce FR-LUX (Friction-aware, Regime-conditioned Learning under eXecution costs), a reinforcement learning framework that learns after-cost trading policies and remains robust across volatility-li
Concentrated liquidity provision in decentralized exchanges presents a fundamental Impulse Control problem. Liquidity Providers (LPs) face a non-trivial trade-off between maximizing fee accrual through tight price-range concentration and minimizing the friction costs of rebalancing, including gas fe
We propose a novel distributionally robust $Q$-learning algorithm for the non-tabular case accounting for continuous state spaces where the state transition of the underlying Markov decision process is subject to model uncertainty. The uncertainty is taken into account by considering the worst-case
The multidimensional Uncertain Volatility Model leads to robust option pricing problems under joint volatility and correlation uncertainty. Their numerical resolution quickly becomes challenging because the associated stochastic control problem is high-dimensional. We propose a backward actor-critic
We present a reinforcement-learning (RL) framework for dynamic hedging of equity index option exposures under realistic transaction costs and position limits. We hedge a normalized option-implied equity exposure (one unit of underlying delta, offset via SPY) by trading the underlying index ETF, usin
This paper explores the application of deep Q-learning to hedging at-the-money options on the S&P500 index. We develop an agent based on the Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (TD3) algorithm, trained to simulate hedging decisions without making explicit model assumptions on price dynam
In an environment of increasingly volatile financial markets, the accurate estimation of risk remains a major challenge. Traditional econometric models, such as GARCH and its variants, are based on assumptions that are often too rigid to adapt to the complexity of the current market dynamics. To ove
We study continuous-time mean–variance portfolio selection in markets where stock prices are diffusion processes driven by observable factors that are also diffusion processes, yet the coefficients of these processes are unknown. Based on the recently developed reinforcement learning (RL) theory for
We propose the Chiarella-Heston model, a new agent-based model for improving the effectiveness of deep hedging strategies. Formulaic alpha mining seeks to discover executable expressions that capture predictive market signals in a vast, noisy search space. Recent LLM-based approaches use prompting, iterative search, or seed-factor evolution, leaving direct factor construction through policy learning less explored. To ad
