Risk management research divides into measurement and mechanism. The measurement literature — VaR and expected shortfall estimation, extreme value theory, drawdown analysis — asks how to quantify what can go wrong in a portfolio. The mechanism literature — systemic risk, contagion networks, stress testing — asks how losses propagate between institutions and markets.
The practical test for measurement papers is backtesting honesty: a VaR model is only as good as its violation rate and the independence of its violations, and papers that report Kupiec or Christoffersen tests on out-of-sample data outrank those that stop at in-sample fit. For tail-risk work specifically, be wary of estimators tuned to one crisis; the ranking below rewards papers validated across multiple stress regimes. This is also where regulation (Basel’s shift from VaR to expected shortfall) keeps the academic work unusually connected to practice.

Accurately defining, measuring and mitigating risk is a cornerstone of financial risk management, especially in the presence of financial contagion. Traditional correlation-based risk assessment methods often struggle under volatile market conditions, particularly in the face of external shocks, hig
Cryptocurrency market is known for exhibiting significantly higher volatility than traditional asset classes. Efficient and adequate risk calculation is vital for managing risk exposures in such market environments where extreme price fluctuations occur in short timeframes. The objective of this the
A defined-benefit pension is only as safe as its sponsor, yet sponsor distress is under-instrumented relative to plan-side modelling. We present a transparent, reproducible early-warning pipeline built entirely on public data. A Sponsor Vulnerability Index (SVI), a gradient-boosted classifier over p
In this paper, we present robust portfolio selection models by incorporating a reward and penalty mechanism into portfolio management. We assume that the joint distribution of the losses of the underlying risky assets in a portfolio is uncertain but lies within a multivariate distribution set. Our g
We derive five tractable credit risk metrics for DeFi lending vault depositors, grounded in a formal three level decomposition of vault risk into mechanical loss channels (Level 1), governance quality (Level 2) and smart contract code integrity (Level 3). For Level 1, we show that six structural fea
This study extends the Gai-Kapadia framework, originally developed for interbank contagion, to assess systemic risk and default cascades in global equity markets. We analyze a 30 asset network comprising Brazilian and developed market equities over the period 2015-2026, constructing exposure based f
This work evaluates the impact of contagious cyber-events, over a finite horizon, on firms’ financial health and on a cyber insurance portfolio. Our approach builds on key empirical findings from economics and cybersecurity. In economics, firm size and growth-rate distributions are non-Gaussian and
The aim of this paper is to dig deeper into understanding the exchange rates and uncertainty dependence. Using the novel Baker et al. (2020)’s daily Twitter Uncertainty Index and BRICS exchange rates, we investigate their extreme tail dependence within an original time-varying copula framework. Our
Energy storage promotes the integration of renewables by operating with charge and discharge policies that balance an intermittent power supply. A key challenge in this emerging sector is how to optimize the operation of storage assets given future price uncertainties and the need to recover the cos
As global financial markets become increasingly interconnected, financial contagion has developed into a major influencer of asset price dynamics. Motivated by this context, our study explores financial contagion both within and between asset communities. We contribute to the literature by examining
This paper introduces a novel framework for analyzing systemic risk in financial markets through multi-scale network dynamics using Model Context Protocol (MCP) for agent communication. We develop an integrated approach that combines transfer entropy networks, agent-based modeling, and wavelet decom
Support and resistance (SR) levels are central to technical analysis, guiding traders in entry, exit, and risk management. Despite widespread use, traditional SR identification methods often fail to adapt to the complexities of modern, volatile markets. Recent research has introduced machine learnin
Time series foundation models (FMs) have emerged as a popular paradigm for zero-shot multi-domain forecasting. These models are trained on numerous diverse datasets and claim to be effective forecasters across multiple different time series domains, including financial data. In this study, we evalua
This paper extends an option-theoretic approach to estimate liquidity spreads for corporate bonds. Inspired by Longstaff’s equity market framework and subsequent work by Koziol and Sauerbier on risk-free zero-coupon bonds, the model views liquidity as a look-back option. The model accounts for the i
We use granular regulatory data on euro interest rate swap trades between January 2021 and June 2023 to assess whether derivative positions of Italian banks can offset losses on their debt securities holdings should interest rates rise unexpectedly. At the aggregate level of the banking system, we f
We study Pareto optimality in a decentralized peer-to-peer risk-sharing market where agents’ preferences are represented by robust distortion risk measures that are not necessarily convex. We obtain a characterization of Pareto-optimal allocations of the aggregate risk in the market, and we show tha
Decentralized Exchanges are becoming even more predominant in today’s finance. Driven by the need to study this phenomenon from an academic perspective, the SIAG/FME Code Quest 2023 was announced. Specifically, participating teams were asked to implement, in Python, the basic functions of an Automat
In this paper, we introduce an impact centrality measure to evaluate shock propagation on financial networks capturing a notion of contagion and systemic risk contributions, permitting comparisons of these risks over time. In addition, we provide a statistical validation method when the network is e
A highly relevant problem of modern finance is the design of Value-at-Risk (VaR) optimal portfolios. Due to contemporary financial regulations, banks and other financial institutions are tied to use the risk measure to control their credit, market, and operational risks. Despite its practical releva
Volatility, as a measure of uncertainty, plays a crucial role in numerous financial activities such as risk management. The Econometrics and Machine Learning communities have developed two distinct approaches for financial volatility forecasting: the stochastic approach and the neural network (NN) a
