Risk management research divides into measurement and mechanism. The measurement literature — VaR and expected shortfall estimation, extreme value theory, drawdown analysis — asks how to quantify what can go wrong in a portfolio. The mechanism literature — systemic risk, contagion networks, stress testing — asks how losses propagate between institutions and markets.
The practical test for measurement papers is backtesting honesty: a VaR model is only as good as its violation rate and the independence of its violations, and papers that report Kupiec or Christoffersen tests on out-of-sample data outrank those that stop at in-sample fit. For tail-risk work specifically, be wary of estimators tuned to one crisis; the ranking below rewards papers validated across multiple stress regimes. This is also where regulation (Basel’s shift from VaR to expected shortfall) keeps the academic work unusually connected to practice.

In this paper, we propose the multivariate range Value-at-Risk (MRVaR) and the multivariate range covariance (MRCov) as two risk measures and explore their desirable properties in risk management. In particular, we explain that such range-based risk measures are appropriate for risk management of re
This paper addresses the importance of incorporating various risk measures in portfolio management and proposes a dynamic hybrid portfolio optimization model that combines the spectral risk measure and the Value-at-Risk in the mean-variance formulation. By utilizing the quantile optimization techniq
In this paper we develop a linear expectile hidden Markov model for the analysis of cryptocurrency time series in a risk management framework. The methodology proposed allows to focus on extreme returns and describe their temporal evolution by introducing in the model time-dependent coefficients evo
The purpose of this paper is to describe and extend the use of the newly-introduced measure, residual estimation risk. Following the seminal work of Bignozzi and Tsanakas, the quantification of residual estimation risk is proposed in a multivariate framework. Our aim is to provide a succinct and pra
Reinforcement learning for trading often struggles to balance upside participation with drawdown control. Profit-only policies can collapse toward passive long exposure on upward-drifting assets, while aggressively risk-penalized rewards can become too defensive during volatile periods. This paper p
Herding – where agents align their behaviors and act collectively – is a central driver of market fragility and systemic risk. Existing approaches to quantify herding rely on price-correlation statistics, which inherently lag because they only detect coordination after it has already moved realise
Connectedness measures quantify aggregate risk spillovers but obscure the local interaction patterns that generate systemic risk. We develop a motif-based framework that first extracts multiscale backbones from quantile connectedness networks and then identifies directed triadic motifs whose frequen
We study a discrete-time multi-period portfolio optimization problem under an explicit constraint on the Deviation Conditional Value-at-Risk (DCVaR), defined as the excess of Conditional Value-at-Risk over expected terminal wealth. The objective is to maximize expected return subject to a global tai
LLM-based financial agents increasingly produce investment rationales before the outcomes needed to evaluate them are observable. This creates a delayed-ground-truth evaluation problem: realized returns remain the eventual arbiter of investment quality, but they arrive too late and are too noisy to
Various financial market scenarios may cause heterogeneous risk assessments among analysts, which motivates the usage of the Generalized Risk Measure in Fadina et al. (2024, Finance and Stochastics). Effectively synthesizing these diverse assessments avoids over-relying on a single, potentially flaw
This paper presents a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework for dynamic portfolio optimization under market uncertainty and risk. The proposed model integrates a Sharpe ratio-based reward function with direct risk control mechanisms, including maximum drawdown and volatility constraints. Proxi
Copula-based Conditional Value at Risk (CCVaR) is defined as an alternative version of the classical Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) for multivariate random vectors intended to be real-valued. We aim to generalize CCVaR to several dimensions (d>=2) when the dependence structure is given by an Archi
We propose a new class of monetary risk measures for assessing financial and ESG risk. The construction is based on classical shortfall risk measures with loss function replaced by a multi-attribute utility function. We present an extensive theoretical analysis of these risk measures, showing specif
We investigate portfolio optimization in financial markets from a trading and risk management perspective. We term this task Risk-Aware Trading Portfolio Optimization (RATPO), formulate the corresponding optimization problem, and propose an efficient Risk-Aware Trading Swarm (RATS) algorithm to solv
Risk-averse investors often wish to exclude stocks from their portfolios that bear high credit risk, which is a measure of a firm’s likelihood of bankruptcy. This risk is commonly estimated by constructing signals from quarterly accounting items, such as debt and income volatility. While such inform
As the developed world replaces Defined Benefit (DB) pension plans with Defined Contribution (DC) plans, there is a need to develop decumulation strategies for DC plan holders. Optimal decumulation can be viewed as a problem in optimal stochastic control. Formulation as a control problem requires sp
Dynamic quantiles, or Conditional Autoregressive Value at Risk (CAViaR) models, have been extensively studied at the individual level. However, efforts to estimate multiple dynamic quantiles jointly have been limited. Existing approaches either sequentially estimate fitted quantiles or impose restri
Previous research on option strategies has primarily focused on their behavior near expiration, with limited attention to the transient value process of the portfolio. In this paper, we formulate Iron Condor portfolio optimization as a stochastic optimal control problem, examining the impact of the
Financial time series (FTS) generation models are a core pillar to applications in finance. Risk management and portfolio optimization rely on realistic multivariate price generation models. Accordingly, there is a strong modelling literature dating back to Bachelier’s Theory of Speculation in 1901.
Providing optimal portfolio selection for investors has always been one of the hot topics in academia. In view of the traditional portfolio model could not adapt to the actual capital market and can provide erroneous results. This paper innovatively constructs a mean-detrended cross-correlation port
