Risk management research divides into measurement and mechanism. The measurement literature — VaR and expected shortfall estimation, extreme value theory, drawdown analysis — asks how to quantify what can go wrong in a portfolio. The mechanism literature — systemic risk, contagion networks, stress testing — asks how losses propagate between institutions and markets.
The practical test for measurement papers is backtesting honesty: a VaR model is only as good as its violation rate and the independence of its violations, and papers that report Kupiec or Christoffersen tests on out-of-sample data outrank those that stop at in-sample fit. For tail-risk work specifically, be wary of estimators tuned to one crisis; the ranking below rewards papers validated across multiple stress regimes. This is also where regulation (Basel’s shift from VaR to expected shortfall) keeps the academic work unusually connected to practice.

In credit risk analysis, survival models with fixed and time-varying covariates are widely used to predict a borrower’s time-to-event. When the time-varying drivers are endogenous, modelling jointly the evolution of the survival time and the endogenous covariates is the most appropriate approach, al
In this paper, we develop a hybrid approach to forecasting the volatility and risk of financial instruments by combining common econometric GARCH time series models with deep learning neural networks. For the latter, we employ Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) networks, whereas four different specification
We introduce a method to estimate simultaneously the tail and the threshold parameters of an extreme value regression model. This standard model finds its use in finance to assess the effect of market variables on extreme loss distributions of investment vehicles such as hedge funds. However, a majo
This paper addresses the challenge of model uncertainty in quantitative finance, where decisions in portfolio allocation, derivative pricing, and risk management rely on estimating stochastic models from limited data. In practice, the unavailability of the true probability measure forces reliance on
This paper develops a copula-based time-series framework for modelling sovereign credit rating activity and its dependence dynamics, with extensions incorporating climate risk. We introduce a mixed-difference transformation that maps discrete annual counts of sovereign rating actions into a continuo
We introduce a semiparametric approach for forecasting Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall (ES) by modeling the conditional scale of financial returns, defined as the difference between two specified quantiles, via restricted quantile regression. Focusing on downside risk, VaR is derived from
This paper evaluates the causal impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) adoption on productivity and systemic risk in the U.S. banking sector. Using a novel dataset linking SEC 10-Q filings to Federal Reserve regulatory data for 809 financial institutions over 2018–2025, we employ two
Credit risk models are a critical decision-support tool for financial institutions, yet tightening data-protection rules (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) increasingly prohibit cross-border sharing of borrower data, even as these models benefit from cross-institution learning. Traditional default prediction suffer
We propose DeePM (Deep Portfolio Manager), a structured deep-learning macro portfolio manager trained end-to-end to maximize a robust, risk-adjusted utility. DeePM addresses three fundamental challenges in financial learning: (1) it resolves the asynchronous “ragged filtration” problem via a Directe
This study models the monopoly pricing of weather index insurance as a Bowley-type sequential game involving a profit-maximizing insurer (leader) and a farmer (follower). The farmer chooses an insurance payoff to minimize a convex distortion risk measure, while the insurer anticipates this best resp
We consider the combination of value-at-risk (VaR) and expected shortfall (ES) forecasts when a large pool of candidate forecasts is available. Given the limited literature in this area, we implement a variety of new combining methods. In terms of simplistic methods, in addition to the mean, we cons
Via an axiomatic approach, we characterize the family of n-th order Gini deviation, defined as the expected range over n independent draws from a distribution, to quantify joint dispersion across multiple observations. This family extends the classical Gini deviation, which relies solely on pairwise
Recent crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions have exposed vulnerabilities and caused disruptions of supply chains, leading to product shortages, increased costs, and economic instability. This has prompted increasing efforts to assess systemic risk, namely the effects of firm d
This paper introduces a novel multivariate volatility modeling framework, named Long Short-Term Memory enhanced BEKK (LSTM-BEKK), that integrates deep learning into multivariate GARCH processes. By combining the flexibility of recurrent neural networks with the econometric structure of BEKK models,
We live in a multivariate world, and effective modeling of financial portfolios, including their construction, allocation, forecasting, and risk analysis, simply is not possible without explicitly modeling the dependence structure of their assets. Dependence structure can drive portfolio results mor
We propose a new risk sensitive reinforcement learning approach for the dynamic hedging of options. The approach focuses on the minimization of the tail risk of the final P&L of the seller of an option. Different from most existing reinforcement learning approaches that require a parametric model of
Predicting volatility in financial markets, including stocks, index ETFs, foreign exchange, and cryptocurrencies, remains a challenging task due to the inherent complexity and non-linear dynamics of these time series. In this study, I apply TimeMixer, a state-of-the-art time series forecasting model
In financial risk management, Value at Risk (VaR) is widely used to estimate potential portfolio losses. VaR’s limitation is its inability to account for the magnitude of losses beyond a certain threshold. Expected Shortfall (ES) addresses this by providing the conditional expectation of such exceed
To comply with increasingly stringent international standards in risk management and regulation, several approaches have been developed in the literature for forecasting tail-risk measures such as Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall (ES). However, the accuracy of these measures can be signifi
In this paper, we present an artificial neural network framework for portfolio compression of a large portfolio of European options with varying maturities (target portfolio) by a significantly smaller portfolio of European options with shorter or same maturity (compressed portfolio), which also rep
