Risk management research divides into measurement and mechanism. The measurement literature — VaR and expected shortfall estimation, extreme value theory, drawdown analysis — asks how to quantify what can go wrong in a portfolio. The mechanism literature — systemic risk, contagion networks, stress testing — asks how losses propagate between institutions and markets.
The practical test for measurement papers is backtesting honesty: a VaR model is only as good as its violation rate and the independence of its violations, and papers that report Kupiec or Christoffersen tests on out-of-sample data outrank those that stop at in-sample fit. For tail-risk work specifically, be wary of estimators tuned to one crisis; the ranking below rewards papers validated across multiple stress regimes. This is also where regulation (Basel’s shift from VaR to expected shortfall) keeps the academic work unusually connected to practice.

Valuing corporate bonds in systemic economies is challenging due to intricate webs of inter-institutional exposures. When a bank defaults, cascading losses propagate through the network, with payments determined by a system of fixed-point equations lacking closed-form solutions. Standard Monte Carlo
This study investigates the efficacy of Conditional Restricted Boltzmann Machines (CRBMs) for modeling high-dimensional financial time series and detecting systemic risk regimes. We extend the classical application of static Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs) by incorporating autoregressive condit
This paper introduces the Fractal-Chaotic Oscillation Co-driven (FCOC) framework, a novel paradigm for financial volatility forecasting that systematically resolves the dual challenges of feature fidelity and model responsiveness. FCOC synergizes two core innovations: our novel Fractal Feature Corre
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are known to play a vital role in economic growth, employment, and innovation. However, they tend to face significant challenges in accessing credit due to limited financial histories, collateral constraints, and exposure to macroeconomic shocks. These chall
The Diversification Quotient (DQ), introduced by Han et al. (2025), is a recently proposed measure of portfolio diversification that quantifies the reduction in a portfolio’s risk-level parameter attributable to diversification. Grounded in a rigorous theoretical framework, DQ effectively captures h
Risk measures such as Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) focus on extreme losses, where scarce tail data makes model error unavoidable. To hedge misspecification, one evaluates worst-case tail risk over an ambiguity set. Using Extreme Value Theory (EVT), we derive first-order asymptotics for worst-cas
The rapid expansion of cross-border e-commerce (CBEC) has created significant opportunities for small- and medium-sized sellers, yet financing remains a critical challenge due to their limited credit histories. Third-party logistics (3PL)-led supply chain finance (SCF) has emerged as a promising sol
Optimal portfolio allocation is often formulated as a constrained risk problem, where one aims to minimize a risk measure subject to some performance constraints. This paper presents new Bayesian Optimization algorithms for such constrained minimization problems, seeking to minimize the conditional
Risk sensitive decision making finds important applications in current day use cases. Existing risk measures consider a single or finite collection of random variables, which do not account for the asymptotic behaviour of underlying systems. Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) is the most commonly used
Transition risk can be defined as the business-risk related to the enactment of green policies, aimed at driving the society towards a sustainable and low-carbon economy. In particular, the value of certain firms’ assets can be lower because they need to transition to a less carbon-intensive busines
We propose a semi-structured discrete-time multi-state model to analyse mortgage delinquency transitions. This model combines an easy-to-understand structured additive predictor, which includes linear effects and smooth functions of time and covariates, with a flexible neural network component that
Estimating extreme risk in reinforcement learning becomes increasingly difficult as the confidence level increases, since only a small number of observations contribute to empirical estimates of Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR). In this paper, we extend an Extreme Value Theory (EVT) approach for CVa
Value-at-Risk (VaR) is a widely adopted quantile-based risk measure in practice, yet incorporating VaR objectives into Markov decision processes (VaR MDPs) remains a longstanding challenge. Recent work has derived dynamic programming equations for VaR MDPs in finite state and action spaces but left
Expectiles are the only law-invariant risk measures that are both coherent and elicitable. Unlike Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR), however, they do not admit a Rockafellar–Uryasev representation that admits tractable Wasserstein reformulations. We address this difficulty by developing an envelope
The use of run-off triangles (ROTs) is a common industry practice in estimating the loss given default (LGD) risk parameter when predicting credit losses in banking. We benchmark this industry practice using credit card data against a more sophisticated (though classical) regression-based approach,
Deep reinforcement-learning policies for order execution can vary substantially across training seeds, so apparent architectural gains may reflect favourable training realisations rather than reproducible properties of the architecture. We evaluate vanilla Double Deep Q-Learning (DDQL), K-means-part
Verified income is often unavailable in digital loan applications, forcing lenders to rely on reported income and potentially leading to over-lending, overly conservative offers, or rejection of creditworthy applicants. Cross-institutional data-sharing constraints make this problem especially diffic
Incorporating spatial information, particularly those influenced by climate, weather, and demographic factors, is crucial for improving underwriting precision and enhancing risk management in insurance. However, spatial data are often unstructured, high-dimensional, and difficult to integrate into p
Betas from spot regressions are central to asset pricing and risk management, as measures of systematic risk. This paper develops a new estimation and inference framework for spot regressions by leveraging high-frequency candlesticks, extending conventional (open-to-close) returns with intra-period
Portfolio optimization constitutes a cornerstone of risk management by quantifying the risk-return trade-off. Since it inherently depends on accurate parameter estimation under conditions of future uncertainty, the selection of appropriate input parameters is critical for effective portfolio constru
