Risk management research divides into measurement and mechanism. The measurement literature — VaR and expected shortfall estimation, extreme value theory, drawdown analysis — asks how to quantify what can go wrong in a portfolio. The mechanism literature — systemic risk, contagion networks, stress testing — asks how losses propagate between institutions and markets.
The practical test for measurement papers is backtesting honesty: a VaR model is only as good as its violation rate and the independence of its violations, and papers that report Kupiec or Christoffersen tests on out-of-sample data outrank those that stop at in-sample fit. For tail-risk work specifically, be wary of estimators tuned to one crisis; the ranking below rewards papers validated across multiple stress regimes. This is also where regulation (Basel’s shift from VaR to expected shortfall) keeps the academic work unusually connected to practice.

In this paper, we address the problem of providing insurance protection against heavy-tailed losses, for which the expected loss may not even be finite. The product we study is based on a combination of traditional insurance up to a given limit and a parametric (or index-based) cover for larger loss
Extending Buehler et al.’s 2019 Deep Hedging paradigm, we innovatively employ deep neural networks to parameterize convex-risk minimization (CVaR/ES) for the portfolio tail-risk hedging problem. Through comprehensive numerical experiments on crisis-era bootstrap market simulators – customizable with
A method for quantile-based, semi-parametric historical simulation estimation of multiple step ahead Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall (ES) models is developed. It uses the quantile loss function, analogous to how the quasi-likelihood is employed by standard historical simulation methods. T
With the widespread application of machine learning in financial risk management, conventional wisdom suggests that longer training periods and more feature variables contribute to improved model performance. This paper, focusing on mortgage default prediction, empirically discovers a phenomenon tha
This paper advances the computational efficiency of Deep Hedging frameworks through the novel integration of Kronecker-Factored Approximate Curvature (K-FAC) optimization. While recent literature has established Deep Hedging as a data-driven alternative to traditional risk management strategies, the
The level of systemic risk in economic and financial systems is strongly determined by the structure of the underlying networks of interdependent entities that can propagate shocks and stresses. Since changes in network structure imply changes in risk levels, it is important to identify structural t
The global balance index is used in the network literature to quantify how balanced a signed network is. In this paper we show that the global balance index of financial correlation networks can be used as a systemic risk measure. We define the global balance index of a network starting from a diffu
We propose an original two-part, duration-severity approach for backtesting Expected Shortfall (ES). While Probability Integral Transform (PIT) based ES backtests have gained popularity, they have yet to allow for separate testing of the frequency and severity of Value-at-Risk (VaR) violations. This
This research examines the correlations between the return volatility of cryptocurrencies, global stock market indices, and the spillover effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, we employed a two-stage multivariate volatility exponential GARCH (EGARCH) model with an integrated dynamic co
According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (2025), the average annual cost of natural catastrophes increased from 70–80 billion USD between 1970 and 2000 to 180–200 billion USD between 2001 and 2020. Reports from organizations such as the IFOA and the WWF highlight the need
This paper proposes a machine learning assisted portfolio optimization framework designed for low data environments and regime uncertainty. We construct a teacher student learning pipeline in which a Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) optimizer generates supervisory labels, and neural models (Bayesian
Accurate forecasting of recovery rates (RR) is central to credit risk management and regulatory capital determination. In many loan portfolios, however, RR modeling is constrained by data scarcity arising from infrequent default events. Transfer learning (TL) offers a promising avenue to mitigate th
Accurately characterizing the implied volatility curves is a central challenge in option pricing and risk management. The classical SABR model by Hagan et al. has been widely adopted in practice due to its well-defined stochastic volatility structure and its tractable closed-form approximation for B
In the context of containment of default contagion in financial networks, we here study a regulator that allocates pre-shock capital or liquidity buffers across banks connected by interbank liabilities and common external asset exposures. The regulator chooses a nonnegative buffer vector under a lin
We introduce a proxy-reliance-controlled conformal recalibration framework for one-sided Value-at-Risk (VaR), and study a question that existing state-aware methods do not usually isolate: how strongly should the recalibration adjustment depend on an imperfect volatility proxy? We formalize this thr
We assess the advantage of combining univariate and multivariate portfolio risk forecasts with the aid of forecast reconciliation techniques. In our analyzes, we assume knowledge of portfolio weights, a standard for portfolio risk management applications. With an extensive simulation experiment, we
Assessing the resilience of the economy requires accounting for its intrinsic multi-layer nature, by assessing for instance how disruptions at the firm level spread through the production network and propagate to the banking sector. Methods exist to measure the reverberation of shocks over the multi
Extreme values and the tail behavior of probability distributions are essential for quantifying and mitigating risk in complex systems of all kinds. In multivariate settings, accounting for correlations is crucial. Although extreme value analysis for infinite correlated systems remains an open chall
Risk forecasts drive trading constraints and capital allocation, yet losses are nonstationary and regime-dependent. This paper studies sequential one-sided VaR control via conformal calibration. I propose regime-weighted conformal risk control (RWC), which calibrates a safety buffer from past foreca
The deployment of autonomous AI agents in derivatives markets has widened a practical gap between static model calibration and realized hedging outcomes. We introduce two reinforcement learning frameworks, a novel Replication Learning of Option Pricing (RLOP) approach and an adaptive extension of Q-
