This hub holds the mathematical engine room of quantitative finance: stochastic control (choose a policy that steers a diffusion), optimal stopping (choose a time to act), and the machinery that solves them — Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equations, viscosity solutions, backward stochastic differential equations, and mean-field games for the many-player limit. The classic applications are Merton-style consumption and investment, optimal liquidation, dividend and reinsurance control, and American-option exercise.
Most papers here are Lab Rats by our scoring: deep theory, little or no data. That is not a criticism of the work, but it changes how you read it. The questions that matter are whether the model’s state variables are observable in practice, whether the closed-form or numerical solution degrades gracefully when parameters are estimated rather than known, and whether a paper that claims a strategy ever confronts it with transaction costs or discrete rebalancing. The handful of papers that pair a control result with a calibrated numerical study rank highest below.

We study reinforcement learning for controlled diffusion processes with unbounded continuous state spaces, bounded continuous actions, and polynomially growing rewards: settings that arise naturally in finance, economics, and operations research. To overcome the challenges of continuous and high-dim
In this paper, we investigate a portfolio selection problem with transaction costs under a two-factor stochastic volatility structure, where volatility follows a mean-reverting process with a stochastic mean-reversion level. The model incorporates both proportional exogenous transaction costs and en
An empirical analysis, suggested by optimal Merton dynamics, reveals some unexpected features of asset volumes. These features are connected to traders’ belief and risk aversion. This paper proposes a trading strategy model in the optimal Merton framework that is representative of the collective beh
In this paper, we study the optimal investment problem considering the herd behaviour between two agents, including one leading expert and one following agent whose decisions are influenced by those of the leading expert. In the objective functional of the optimal investment problem, we introduce th
Motivated by practical applications, we explore the constrained multi-period mean-variance portfolio selection problem within a market characterized by a dynamic factor model. This model captures predictability in asset returns driven by state variables and incorporates cone-type portfolio constrain
Motivated by recent results on the dual formulation of optimal stopping problems, we investigate in this short paper how the knowledge of an approximating dual martingale can improve the efficiency of primal methods. In particular, we show on numerical examples that accurate approximations of a dual
This paper studies the continuous-time reinforcement learning (RL) for optimal switching problems across multiple regimes. We consider a type of exploratory formulation under entropy regularization where the agent randomizes both the timing of switches and the selection of regimes through the genera
We present a Pontryagin-Guided Direct Policy Optimization (PG-DPO) framework for Merton’s portfolio problem, unifying modern neural-network-based policy parameterization with the adjoint viewpoint from Pontryagin’s maximum principle (PMP). Instead of approximating the value function (as done in deep
Quantitative markets are characterized by swift dynamics and abundant uncertainties, making the pursuit of profit-driven stock trading actions inherently challenging. Within this context, reinforcement learning (RL), which operates on a reward-centric mechanism for optimal control, has surfaced as a
This paper investigates the valuation of variable annuity contracts with an early surrender option under non-Markovian models. Moreover, policyholders are provided with guaranteed minimum maturity and death benefits to protect against the downside risk. Unlike the existing literature, our variable a
We present a strictly monotone, provably convergent two-dimensional (2D) integration method for multi-period mean-conditional value-at-risk (mean-CVaR) reward-risk stochastic control in models whose one-step increment law is specified via a closed-form characteristic function (CF). When the transiti
We develop a neural-network framework for multi-period risk–reward stochastic control problems with constrained two-step feedback policies that may be discontinuous in the state. We allow a broad class of objectives built on a finite-dimensional performance vector, including terminal and path-depen
This paper investigates the robust optimal control of sampled-data stochastic systems with multiplicative noise and distributional ambiguity. We consider a class of discrete-time optimal control problems where the controller \emph{jointly} selects a feedback policy and a sampling period to maximize
Consider a closed pooled annuity fund investing in n assets with discrete-time rebalancing. At time 0, each annuitant makes an initial contribution to the fund, committing to a predetermined schedule of withdrawals. Require annuitants to be homogeneous in the sense that their initial contributions a
This article studies a retirement planning problem from a new perspective in which a retiree delegates an initial lump sum to a professional fund manager. The fund is managed dynamically to deliver lifelong benefits while satisfying a guarantee that, at all times, wealth remains above a prescribed s
We study a finite-horizon reversible investment problem in which a risk-neutral firm adjusts capacity at a proportional purchase cost and a lower salvage value under multi-factor geometric Brownian motion. Via the singular control–optimal switching correspondence, the marginal value of capacity sol
Variance swaps are a convenient instrument for trading vega and convexity, and a listed contract now trades on Cboe. We ask when a trader should put such a position on and when she should take it off, and for a perpetual, continuously settled contract we answer both in closed form: each threshold is
We consider an equity market subject to risk from both unhedgeable shocks and default. The novelty of our work is that to partially offset default risk, investors may dynamically trade in a credit default swap (CDS) market. Assuming investment opportunities are driven by functions of an underlying d
We introduce the deep multi-FBSDE method for robust approximation of coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs), focusing on cases where the deep BSDE method of Han, Jentzen, and E (2018) fails to converge. To overcome the convergence issues, we consider a family of FBSDEs t
Merton portfolio management problem is studied in this paper within a stochastic volatility, non constant time discount rate, and power utility framework. This problem is time inconsistent and the way out of this predicament is to consider the subgame perfect strategies. The later are characterized
